About me

I am Daniel, the founder of Coerthas Retrievers, where my passion for Labradors and Golden Retrievers is grounded by a commitment to responsible breeding, canine health, temperament and welfare.

My involvement with dogs extends well beyond breeding. I'm an active gundog handler, competing successfully in working tests and field trials, with achievements across both disciplines. Working closely with dogs in demanding environments has given me a particular appreciation for the importance of natural ability, sound temperament, trainability and the relationship between genetics and behaviour.

I also serve on the committee of the Northern Golden Retriever Association, where I hold the position of Breed Health Representative. This reflects my particular interest in canine health, responsible breeding practices, genetic diversity and the long-term welfare of pedigree dogs.

Alongside my extensive practical experience in breeding, training and working dogs, my academic work at Harper Adams University focuses on Clinical Animal Behaviour and Welfare, complementing my interests in canine genetics, temperament, behavioural development and long-term welfare outcomes.

I believe that responsible breeding requires considerably more than simply pairing two healthy dogs. It demands a thorough understanding of inherited characteristics, behavioural development, breed-specific traits and the environmental influences that shape a dog's future.

This philosophy is central to everything we do at Coerthas Retrievers.

Our breeding programme places considerable emphasis on comprehensive health testing, carefully selected pairings and the early development of our puppies. Through structured early experiences, including Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), Early Scent Introduction (ESI) and thoughtful socialisation, we aim to give each puppy the strongest possible foundation for life.

Whether destined for a family home, a working environment or a more specialised role, our objective remains the same: to produce healthy, confident, well-adjusted dogs with excellent temperaments.

Our responsibility doesn't end when a puppy leaves us. I maintain lifelong relationships with our owners, providing ongoing guidance and support throughout their dogs' lives.

For me, Coerthas Retrievers represents more than a breeding programme. It is a commitment to combining practical experience, scientific understanding and responsible breeding practices to continually improve the health, temperament and welfare of the dogs we produce.
